Bitcoin Needs Iran Resolution or Debt Fears to Break $80K

Fiscal stress can lift Bitcoin's appeal, but Fed policy remains the main constraint, making August inflation data and the September Fed meeting the key near-term tests.

BTC rose from the low $60,000s to as high as $80,100 as renewed concerns over U.S. fiscal sustainability and Treasury purchases of long-dated government debt helped drive the move, CoinShares said. The firm said Bitcoin has increasingly traded like gold over the past two weeks.

CoinShares said a sustained break above $80,000 would likely require one of two developments: a resolution of the Iran conflict that lowers oil prices and inflation expectations, or a further loss of confidence in U.S. sovereign debt that boosts demand for non-sovereign stores of value.

Fed policy remains the main constraint on further gains. The August inflation report and September Federal Reserve meeting are the key near-term events to watch.
