DekaBank launched crypto trading on Oct. 19 through participating Sparkassen, letting adult customers buy Bitcoin in their bank’s app after opening a Deka crypto account. As of Oct. 20, five savings banks were listed, and Deka says more will join in stages over the coming months. The service also offers Ethereum, Solana, XRP and Polygon’s POL.
Why it matters
The launch puts crypto trading inside a familiar retail banking channel, but access depends on each Sparkasse choosing to participate. Deka did not report account or customer numbers, so the rollout’s actual reach is not yet clear.
Custody is centralized: Deka holds customers’ private keys in an omnibus wallet. Customers can transfer crypto only to addresses at specified providers, not directly to their own self-custody wallets. The listed providers are Crypto Finance (Deutschland), Tangany, Börse Stuttgart Digital Custody and Bullish Europe.
Market impact
Each purchase or sale costs €0.99 plus a DekaBank spread, whose rate is not stated in the pricing sheet. There is no minimum order size, and the maximum is €250,000 per transaction. Deka lists custody and permitted outbound delivery as free; the minimum delivery amount for Bitcoin is 0.0001 BTC.
The service warns that technical faults or maintenance may prevent trading at a preferred time or price. Crypto holdings are not covered by statutory bank-deposit protection, and customers could lose their full investment.
