Ripple backs Flutterwave $3.2B Series E to expand RLUSD in Africa

Ripple has taken a strategic position in Flutterwave's Series E round at a $3.2 billion valuation, deepening a product alliance that will embed RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin, and the XRP Ledger into the African payments company's settlement stack. The investment, announced Tuesday, ties fresh capital to a concrete integration roadmap rather than a passive minority stake.

Flutterwave has raised more than $500 million to date and processes more than 1 billion transactions worth over $50 billion across 34 African countries. The new capital and partnership target three workstreams: RLUSD as a settlement asset inside Flutterwave's payment rails and Send App remittance corridors, the XRP Ledger for faster transaction clearing, and a unified API linking Flutterwave's domestic network with Ripple Payments.

Why it matters

RLUSD carries a market capitalization of roughly $1.65 billion — a fraction of Tether's $186.5 billion USDT and Circle's ~$75 billion USDC — so distribution is the bottleneck. Flutterwave gives Ripple a live, high-volume channel into African cross-border payments, where multi-day settlement and elevated FX margins are the structural pain points the integration is designed to attack. For Flutterwave, the deal layers stablecoin settlement and a global liquidity partner onto a regional network that already clears billions in annual flow.

Market impact

The deal lands inside a wider Ripple push to lock down regulated rails: a conditional OCC charter for Ripple National Trust Bank, an Australian Financial Services License targeted by April 2026 via the BC Payments Australia acquisition, an expanded Major Payment Institution license in Singapore, and a slot in the MAS-backed BLOOM tokenized-bank-liabilities pilot. Each leg widens the corridors where RLUSD can actually clear at institutional scale — and African remittances, one of the most fragmented cross-border flows on the planet, become the next live test.
