Solana Activates Alpenglow, Cuts Finality to 150 Milliseconds

The upgrade replaces TowerBFT and compresses confirmation into one step, a shift aimed at faster exchange deposits and merchant payments.

Solana validators activated Anza’s Alpenglow consensus protocol on mainnet-beta at slot 459,653,000 at approximately 14:00 UTC on Wednesday. The upgrade replaces TowerBFT, Solana’s consensus protocol since its March 2020 launch, and cuts transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds by condensing a two-step confirmation process into one.

Why it matters

Faster finality could make Solana more practical for exchanges crediting deposits and merchants processing payments, where confirmation time affects how quickly funds can be treated as settled. Anza CEO Brennan Watt called Alpenglow the largest and most ambitious blockchain upgrade since “The Merge,” saying the team moved from white paper to mainnet in under 18 months.

Anza published the design in May 2025. Before deployment, the upgrade went through public testing that included red teaming, penetration testing, repeated migration rehearsals and a security competition.

Market impact

The live deployment delivers a major change to Solana’s transaction-confirmation process, but the seed provides no price or market-flow data to quantify a trading response. The 150-millisecond finality figure is the clearest immediate measure of the upgrade’s impact for applications that depend on rapid settlement.

Anza has also outlined further work without confirmed release dates. Rotor would change how block data moves across the network, while geographically aware leader rotations are intended to reduce delays between block producers. Separately, the Quantumglow research design would replace Alpenglow’s elliptic-curve cryptography with hash-based signatures to address post-quantum security while preserving its finality speed. Jump Crypto’s Firedancer team has proposed removing Solana’s 60 million compute-unit block limit through SIMD-0370, allowing block capacity to scale with validator hardware rather than remain fixed.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How much does Alpenglow reduce Solana transaction finality?

Anza says finality falls from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. The upgrade achieves this by condensing the previous two-step confirmation process into one.

  2. Which consensus protocol did Alpenglow replace on Solana?

Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT, the consensus protocol Solana had operated since its March 2020 launch.

  3. How could faster finality affect exchanges and merchants?

The shorter confirmation time is relevant to exchanges crediting deposits and merchants processing payments, where rapid settlement matters.

  4. What testing did Alpenglow undergo before mainnet deployment?

Anza said public testing included red teaming, penetration testing, repeated migration rehearsals and a security competition.

  5. What other Solana changes has Anza outlined?

Rotor would change block-data movement, and geographically aware leader rotations aim to reduce delays between block producers. Quantumglow is a research design for post-quantum signatures; none of these changes has a confirmed release date.
