Stellar Payments Arrive in MetaMask Wallet

The integration adds a stablecoin payment route, but users must fund Stellar accounts and activate receiving trustlines before some cross-chain transfers.

MetaMask added Stellar as a default network in Mobile and Extension on Oct. 29, giving users a Stellar address derived from their existing multichain account recovery phrase. The integration opens a route for stablecoin payments such as USDC, but new accounts need at least 1 XLM and the receiving token must be activated before it can accept funds.

Why it matters

Stellar accounts require a minimum reserve of 1 XLM, plus 0.5 XLM for each ordinary token trustline. Other account entries can raise the minimum, and users also need spendable XLM to cover activation fees. The reserved balance remains in the account, while another account can sponsor reserve requirements.

Adding a token to MetaMask’s visible list is not enough. Users must open the inactive token entry and confirm activation. Swaps between tokens already on Stellar can create a trustline automatically, but cross-chain swaps into non-XLM tokens require manual setup first.

Market impact

The integration makes Stellar available within a widely used multichain wallet, broadening access to its payment network and stablecoin transfers. The setup requirements add friction, particularly for users moving assets from another chain.

MetaMask warns that bridged funds can be lost if they arrive before the receiving trustline is activated. An ordinary Stellar token send to an address without the required trustline instead fails, according to MetaMask. Users should check the destination token’s activation before confirming a bridge.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Where is Stellar available in MetaMask?

Stellar is available as a default network in MetaMask Mobile and Extension. Its address is derived from the recovery phrase in a user's existing multichain account.

  2. How much XLM does a new Stellar account need?

MetaMask's documented flow requires at least 1 XLM for a new, unfunded account. An ordinary token trustline adds a 0.5 XLM reserve, and fees require spendable XLM beyond the reserve.

  3. Does adding a token to MetaMask activate its Stellar trustline?

No. Users must open the token marked Inactive, choose Activate, and confirm the transaction. Merely adding it to the visible list does not complete activation.

  4. Can MetaMask create a Stellar trustline automatically?

A swap between tokens already on Stellar can automatically create a trustline. For a cross-chain swap into a non-XLM token, MetaMask requires users to activate the receiving trustline manually first.

  5. What happens if a Stellar token is sent without a trustline?

MetaMask warns that bridged funds can be lost if they arrive before the receiving trustline is active. An ordinary Stellar token send to an address without the required trustline fails.
