Polkadot (DOT) is a Layer 0 protocol that enables distinct blockchains to exchange messages and value without relying on a trusted intermediary, while allowing each chain to retain its own specialized design. The network is heterogeneous, meaning it places no constraints on the architecture of the chains it connects, so both blockchain-based systems and conventional data structures can join as parachains, provided they meet a defined set of technical criteria. The protocol pools security across its connected chains, giving individual blockchains access to a shared security model that would be costly to establish on their own. Chains in the network can transact with one another in a trust-free manner, and many of the native parachains are built using Polkadot Runtime Environment SDKs, such as Substrate developed by Parity Technologies. The DOT token operates within a Proof of Stake consensus framework and serves governance functions for the network. Polkadot is also present across several broader ecosystems, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, and is included in multiple crypto market indices.
