Verus-Ethereum bridge loses $11.6M in active exploit
Blockaid flags the cross-chain bridge as still actively draining, with Peckshield tallying the loss in tBTC, ETH, and USDC so far.
TBTC is a decentralized, wrapped Bitcoin token that represents Bitcoin on non-Bitcoin networks at a 1:1 ratio with native BTC. Rather than relying on a centralized custodian, TBTC is secured by a randomly selected group of node operators on the Threshold Network, who use threshold cryptography to manage deposited Bitcoin. A majority agreement among these operators is required for any transaction involving the underlying assets, and operator groups are rotated regularly to reduce the risk of collusion. An insurance backstop, referred to as a coverage pool, is available as a fallback if a wallet is ever compromised. The Threshold Network itself was formed through the merger of NuCypher and Keep networks and operates as a DAO-governed platform offering threshold cryptography services to web3 applications. TBTC functions as a permissionless bridge between Bitcoin and other blockchain environments, including Ethereum, allowing BTC holders to access lending, borrowing, stablecoin minting, and liquidity provision across multiple ecosystems. It is available across a broad range of networks, reflecting its role as an interoperability layer for bringing Bitcoin value into decentralized finance.
