Sky is the native governance token of Sky Protocol, a decentralized finance platform that launched in 2024 as a rebrand and evolution of the original Maker Protocol on Ethereum. The protocol is designed to offer a non-custodial environment where users can trade, save, and earn rewards while maintaining full control over their assets. Its architecture centers on USDS, a decentralized stablecoin soft-pegged to the U.S. dollar, supported entirely by smart contracts rather than any central intermediary. SKY functions as the community's voting share, granting holders the authority to decide on major upgrades, parameters, and policies across the protocol. Beyond governance, the token can be deposited into the Staking Engine, an on-chain mechanism that allows participants to help secure the network, earn rewards, and unlock borrowing access to USDS. The protocol also incorporates SkyLink, an interoperability layer that enables assets to move across multiple blockchains for faster, lower-cost transactions. Unusually for a major DeFi system, Sky Protocol has no traditional executive leadership or centralized core team.
