The problem it solves

Ethereum's economic security is enormous, but until restaking arrived it could only secure Ethereum itself. New services — bridges, oracles, data availability layers, sequencers — had to bootstrap their own security from scratch, often with weak token economics. EigenLayer's idea: let Ethereum's existing staked capital extend its security to those services in exchange for extra rewards.

How it works

Three concepts.

Restakers and operators

An ETH staker can opt into EigenLayer by restaking — pointing their staked ETH or a liquid staking token (like stETH) at the protocol. Restakers delegate to operators, who run the additional services on their behalf and bear the operational responsibility.

Actively Validated Services (AVSs)

Each AVS is a service that wants to rent Ethereum security. Examples include bridges, oracle networks, data-availability layers, and proof systems. AVSs define their own slashing conditions — what behavior triggers a penalty for the operators (and indirectly the restakers) backing them.

Slashing

If an operator misbehaves on an AVS, the AVS can call slashing against the operator's restaked capital. The restakers behind that operator can lose part of their stake. Different AVSs have different slashing surfaces, and stacking them stacks the risks.

The EIGEN token

EIGEN is the protocol's governance token. It does not pay yield directly. Holders vote on protocol decisions — supported AVSs, parameters, treasury — and the token can play a role in intersubjective slashing (a model where the broader EIGEN community arbitrates ambiguous misbehavior).

Real use cases

  • Extending Ethereum security to new services. AVSs piggyback on restaked ETH instead of bootstrapping a weak native token economy.
  • Extra yield for restakers. Restakers earn AVS rewards on top of their underlying staking rewards.
  • Validator-operator businesses. Operators can monetize their infrastructure across multiple AVSs.
  • Liquid restaking. Many protocols issue liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) representing a restaked position that stays liquid.

Risks worth knowing

  • Cascading slashing. If a restaker is backing several AVSs and one slashes them, the effect can ripple through their position. Restakers should understand each AVS they support.
  • AVS-specific risk. A new AVS with weak engineering is much riskier than a battle-tested one. AVS quality varies.
  • Smart-contract risk. The EigenLayer contracts plus AVS contracts plus liquid-restaking-token contracts compose into a deep stack — each layer carries risk.
  • Ethereum-security concentration. Critics worry that a large share of restaked ETH backing many services could create systemic risk for Ethereum itself if a major restaker fails.
  • Reward variability. AVS rewards are not guaranteed; they depend on AVS revenue and competition.
